As with any wellness trend, when it comes to our health, you want to be sure you’re making the right choice. And the same applies to our four-legged companions. You want to do what’s best for your pup, and this might include seeking alternative treatments. While research is not as extensive as it is for humans, what research there is has suggested CBD benefits for dogs.

That’s right, CBD can help pooches in a variety of ways, from alleviating anxiety and depression to treating pain and seizures. Of course, as with CBD for humans, we can make no medical claims regarding this, but as research suggests little to no risk in giving CBD to dogs, you’ve not much to lose by trying.

Naturally, with so much information floating around on the internet, it can be tough to know which information to trust. So, what do you need to know about CBD oil for dogs? To help with this, we’ve looked at what CBD is, how it affects dogs, and what sort of benefits you might expect for your beloved family member.

Such treatments have historically been considered off limits by Western medicine but are readily embraced by other cultures. But as more and more people in the West become aware of CBD’s incredible benefits, attitudes are starting to shift. CBD is a phenomenal compound that can have incredible benefits without the unpleasant intoxicating effect.

And it comes in a variety of forms, too, so you can administer it to your pup in whatever way is most convenient. So, what is CBD? Let’s discuss.

What is CBD?

Let’s first start by addressing the elephant in the room – cannabis. Many people hear the word and think that CBD is illegal or that it will leave their dog intoxicated. This stems from the fact that CBD comes from the Cannabis sativa plant and that cannabis is illegal in the UK. In fact, there’s a big distinction here worth noting.

The Cannabis sativa plant contains over 100 compounds, including CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). THC is a psychoactive compound that causes a person to become high (stoned). Any Cannabis sativa plant with a THC content greater than 0.3% is classified as marijuana.

CBD is a non-psychoactive compound that has a myriad of health benefits. Most notably, it relaxes a person without causing them to become high. It’s regarded as the “boy scout” in medical circles as it can perform a wide range of functions, from reducing inflammation to decreasing blood pressure and alleviating pain.

Certain varieties of Cannabis sativa plant contain equal to or less than 0.3% THC. These plants are classed as hemp and are perfectly legal.

In short, while both CBD and THC come from the same plant, one relaxes and has a wealth of health benefits. The other does also offer many health benefits, but with the drawback of leaving you feeling high. Understandably, this makes CBD more suitable for dogs.

    I agree

We at The CBD Flower Shop make NO Medical Claims regarding CBD or hemp oil. We’re not stating that CBD has any medicinal properties, though it has been suggested that it MAY do. Research is still ongoing, and as with any natural product, you should always consult with a doctor before you start using it.

    How Does CBD Affect Dogs?

All mammals, including humans and dogs have an endocannabinoid system, which affects vital organs, such as:

    Brain

    Skin

    Heart

    Eyes

    Stomach

This system even affects your mood, and an imbalance can throw any of these systems out of whack. Our bodies produce cannabinoids which affect the endocannabinoid system.

THC binds to endocannabinoid receptors in the brain in such a way as to cause psychoactive effects. CBD binds to these receptors but not in the same way. If there’s an imbalance in the endocannabinoid system, administering CBD can help restore this balance (homeostasis), and thus provide relief for a lot of ailments.

CBD Benefits for Dogs - What Dog Health Problems Can CBD Treat?

There are numerous CBD benefits for dogs, as CBD can help with issues that include:

    • Pain
    • Seizures
    • Anxiety and Depression
    • Inflammation
    • Skin Conditions
    • Sleeplessness

It should be noted that we at The CBD Flower Shop make no medical claims regarding CBD. There is far less research at this stage than there is for CBD usage in humans. Fortunately, research is ongoing.

    Pain

As with humans, pain can be caused by a variety of things and it’s important to seek medical advice from a trained veterinarian. Once it’s been determined that the pain isn’t being caused by something life threatening, you may wish to explore alternate forms of pain relief.

Often, pain can be caused by an imbalance in the endocannabinoid system. By introducing phytocannabinoids in the form of CBD, this can help restore balance and reduce pain.

    Seizures

Seizures are caused when neurons in the brain misfire. Seeing your dog suffer a seizure is an upsetting experience and seizures can cause permanent damage if left unchecked. While research is limited, the National Institute of Health published CBD research that shows strong reductions in epileptic seizures in rodents.

Research also suggests that CBD is also a strong and highly effective therapeutic anti-convulsant, making it a potential candidate for treating seizures.

    Anxiety and Depression

Pups can be become anxious for a variety of reasons, such as if they’re separated from their owner or taken to the vet. They can also become depressed just like humans. Stressors vary from one dog to the next, but signs of depression range from under/over grooming, reduced/ increased appetite, and unusual displays of aggression.

CBD has been shown to moderate production of the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol influences the brain receptors that govern mood regulation. By moderating cortisol production, CBD can have a positive, uplifting affect on a dog’s mood. This can have the added benefit of calming a dog that’s anxious because of separation anxiety, visits to the vet, etc.

    Inflammation

Information on this is limited and more conceptual, but research has shown that CBD can help with acute and chronic inflammation. It’s believed it does this by mediating the dog’s body’s inflammatory response. How it does is still largely unknown, with one theory suggesting that it acts as an immunosuppressant, reducing the strength at which the body’s immune system responds.

    Skin Conditions

CBD can help dogs with eczema and psoriasis as it contains omega 3 & 6 acids which promote skin hydration and moisture retention. CBD also possesses antibacterial and antifungal properties, and so may be useful for combatting skin infections.

    Sleeplessness

If your dog is not sleeping, this can have a detrimental effect on your dog’s health. Sleeplessness can result from illness, injury, and/ or stress. CBD can work by affecting the 5-HT1a serotonin receptors in the dog’s body. By binding to these receptors, it can block depression- and anxiety-causing molecules from binding. This can leave dogs feeling sleepy.

    Is CBD Safe to Use?

While research is limited, it’s generally accepted by vets that CBD is safe to use. In most cases where mild side effects occur, this is often the result of other ingredients present in the CBD (for instance, other botanicals). Finding the correct dosage can also be a problem. So, it’s important to consult with your vet before administering CBD to your dog.
