CBD is a compound that was once consigned to the under-counter in alternative health stores. Never seen in high street stores, its use was somewhat shrouded in confusion, with many assuming it was no different to cannabis. While the status of CBD is changing, with it becoming more accepted in the mainstream, there is still much confusion surrounding it.

Much of this puzzlement stems from the fact that CBD comes from the Cannabis sativa plant. When we hear the word ‘cannabis’, we automatically think of getting high, experiencing the munchies, and addiction. We naturally associate CBD with marijuana. That’s not surprising, considering CBD, marijuana, and THC have a common link.

But the question is, “Is CBD addictive?”. Can you get addicted to CBD? Whether through prolonged or even short-term use. Because marijuana can be highly addictive, especially when used heavily and at high doses, most assume CBD addiction is a thing. Products containing CBD have grown in availability in recent years, with everything from gummies to topicals, oils, and even CBD-infused pillows.

So, should you be concerned about becoming addicted to CBD products? CBD’s rapid rise in popularity has been fuelled largely by the compound’s purported health-boosting benefits. But you may be hesitant to even try CBD if you’re concerned about developing a cannabis addiction. But should you be concerned?

In this article, we tackle the question head-on and seek to provide answers regarding whether CBD can be addictive or not. Please note that research is still ongoing, but so far, there’s been enough research for us to paint a fairly accurate picture. Let’s discuss!

What is CBD?

The Cannabis sativa plant consists of more than 100 compounds, two of which are CBD and THC. CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive compound that’s considered in medical circles as the “boy scout”. This is because it performs a variety of functions in the body, from decreasing blood pressure to relieving pain.

It comes from a variety of Cannabis sativa plants known as hemp. For a plant to be classified as hemp, it must contain less than or equal to 0.3% THC.

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is a psychoactive compound that’s found in marijuana varieties of the Cannabis sativa plant. These plants contain more than 0.3% THC. THC is the compound that’s responsible for the intoxicating effect that leaves a person feeling high (or stoned).

    I agree

We at The CBD Flower Shop make NO Medical Claims regarding CBD or hemp oil. We’re not stating that CBD has any medicinal properties, though it has been suggested that it MAY do. Research is still ongoing, and as with any natural product, you should always consult with a doctor before you start using it.

Can You Get Addicted to CBD?

Is CBD addictive? Let’s first define drug addiction. Drug addiction is a compulsion to use a substance or an inability to cease using it, even in the face of negative consequences. These substances exhibit a chemical reaction in the body, often targeting the pleasure centres of the brain.

As the substance builds up in the system, it becomes harder and harder to do without. Going without the substance often leads to withdrawal symptoms, which can be highly unpleasant. As the addiction grows, a person may require higher doses to achieve the same euphoric high.

THC is a compound produced in marijuana varieties of Cannabis sativa plants that behaves in this way. It binds to endocannabinoid receptors in the brain associated with things such as:

    Pleasure

    Movement

    Memory

    Thought

Where CBD differs is that while it does interact with the endocannabinoid system, it does not possess the intoxicating properties of THC. In fact, according to research, CBD has a good safety profile and can be well-tolerated, even at high doses.

Because CBD doesn’t lead to intoxication or produce the same psychoactive effects as THC, research has suggested that it does not lead to dependence. Can you get addicted to CBD? In short, no.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has even suggested that CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential. Plus, there is no evidence to date that shows any health-related issues occurring using pure CBD.

It should be noted, though, that CBD does contain very small quantities of THC. For it to be legal in the UK, these quantities must not exceed 0.2%. This is where people should be careful, however. Many CBD products contain far more THC than their labels state.

So, care should be taken when purchasing CBD products. Evidence does suggest that people can become tolerant to THC and may experience withdrawal symptoms. In nearly all instances, though, using low-THC CBD products almost never results in addiction. Conversely, using high-THC cannabis strains often does.

    Benefits of CBD

Now that we’ve answered the question, “Can you get addicted to CBD?” let’s dive into the benefits of using CBD. The purported health-associated effects of CBD are what’s been driving its popularity in recent years. And there’s one item on the list below that may surprise you if you’re reading this article.

You should consider taking CBD because:

These are just some of the health effects of taking CBD. You can find out a little more about each one below or by calling The CBD Flower Shop.

    CBD Helps to Treat Addiction

We said there would be a benefit that might surprise you, and this is it. If you came here asking, “Is CBD addictive” it might perplex you then to hear that not only is CBD not addictive, but it may also actually help with addiction.

Research is quite thin on this subject, but what little there is suggests that CBD demonstrates promise in the treatment of cocaine and methamphetamine addiction. In a 2015 review of available preclinical and clinical data, it was discovered that CBD possesses various therapeutic properties.

These properties may be conducive to treating opioid, cocaine, and psychostimulant addiction. CBD may even be beneficial to those trying to overcome cannabis and tobacco addictions. A further study in 2019 suggested that CBD may help reduce drug cravings, paranoia, impulsivity, and withdrawal symptoms associated with crack-cocaine addiction.

    CBD Reduce Inflammation

As with the above, research here is again limited and more conceptual. What research exists shows that CBD can act as a treatment for inflammation, both acute and chronic. While the way CBD accomplishes this is still largely unknown, early studies have proven highly promising. Researchers speculate that one such way CBD accomplishes this is by acting as an immunosuppressant, dulling an over-zealous immune response.

    CBD Relieve Anxiety and Depression

CBD may also help with alleviating feelings of anxiety and depression. One example involves a study in which CBD was found to be useful for reducing symptoms of generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and social anxiety disorder.

Furthermore, studies have also highlighted how CBD influences how the brain responds to serotonin. This could potentially have an effect like antidepressants. Again, research is ongoing, and there’s no conclusive evidence to suggest what CBD might treat, when it is best used, and what dosage should be taken.
